It’s time for our winter garden and I am so excited.  (I know it doesn’t take much does it)  We (in we I mean DT) planted broccoli, cabbage, carrots, mustard greens, spinach, mustard spinach, bib lettuce, butternut squash, acorn squash, and garlic. I can’t wait to taste the vegetables and use them in many different recipes.

The squash are a bit of an experiment they really shouldn’t be planted this late in the season but I wanted to see how they do in our mild winters.  This is our first time to do garlic, and lettuce and I can’t wait to see how they do.  DT is excited for the cabbage and planted 24 plants he wants me to make tons of Sauerkraut (anyone have a tried true recipe?) he and my grandfather Pop-po really love it.

DT plants them about 12-15 inches apart

With seeds he lightly sprinkles them on top of the rows and then covers with just a little soil

  1. Wow, that’s amazing! I can’t wait to see the progress it makes. I’m awful in the garden so I’m always impressed by people who can do it!

  2. DT has the green thumb seriously I only take credit for the cooking/canning. I am so excited also!! I will keep updating with all the developments.

  3. I know what you mean on the hubby having the green thumb. lol That is our story too ! I am helping a lot more lately and am learning tons about gardening. This year I was taught a lot about seed saving. This coming Nov. 3 we are celebrating 18 years of marriage. I cannot believe how fast the time goes. [0= Ohhh I wanted to ask where in the world are you . We get snow during the winter. Do you live in Florida ? I know other bloggy friends that live south are planting winter gardens.

  4. Mary- Great question. We are in Texas near the gulf, so yes we don’t get much snow, though the Christmas of 04 we had snow, first time in over 100 years. It was awesome.
