Our winter garden is slowly coming to an end. WE DT has pulled and tilled almost everything, except for the broccoli and the cabbage.
This years garden was a learning experience, it didn’t do nearly as well as expected because of our harsher than normal winter and tons of rain. Our cabbage never quite grew, neither did our beets, spinach, or cauliflower (only slightly).

Though our broccoli did well and continues to grow more and more sprouts.
But one thing that is better this year than last year, is my two best garden helpers.
They just love to take pictures and look at themselves, here is a self portrait and Little W and me.

We pulled all of the turnips and carrots and the boys helped pulling and putting in the bucket.
Looks like I will be busy chopping, blanching and freezing this weekend.
Soon we will be planting our summer garden!!! I look forward to tons of fresh tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and green beans!

I’m going to plant a lot of new things this year. I mean, things I didn’t plant last year. Cauliflower, tomatos, zuchini, I probably spelled half those things wrong, lol
You should also make a carrot dish for Pop’s birthday party with all those carrots!
I think your winter garden did pretty well, considering our wonky Gulf Coast winter! All I got were a few radishes. I’ve already put in a few more everbearing strawberries, eight tomato plants and one measly pepper … maybe it’s too early for the bell pepper starts in the nurseries. Beans, cantaloupe and eggplant to follow. Last year was our first for melons and they were amazing. I highly recommend them. (Love the self-portraits, too!)

Nice garden… we are planning what we are going to plant and preserve this summer now too… we got our tomato seedlings started just last night!

Oh my goodness you have a ton of carrots and turnips!! I think its awesome idea to take a picture so you can compare to the previous years! Good luck with your summer garden we just want a almost weed free backyard then maybe we will start a garden….my father in law has one Aiden can help in though!

We always plant a summer garden. Tomatoes, zuchini, cucumber, beans, and some other random veggies. The last few years have not been very productive. 🙁
What a beautiful harvest! Oh how I wish we were able to grow year around. We’ve been thinking about experimenting with growing some cool season crops in our greenhouse over winter, but I just haven’t gotten brave enough to do it yet.
I’ve never tried a turnip before. How do you eat yours??

Wow, what a heap of carrots! I’m hoping we can do that this next winter. I’m trying to read up on overwintering and winter gardens. It’s a bit challenging up here because we don’t get the light intensity (the heat can be supplied, if needed… but light intensity is the killer). I’ll try though.
Oh, and check out my last blog post on homemade plant pots! I don’t know if you do seedlings indoors at all, but I just figured this process out (and improvised my own rules in places), and I LOVE it. And what a cost-saver too.
We have tall trees in our neighborhood, and a smallish lot, so I’ll be doing more container gardening this year. But I am looking forward to expanding a bit this year. Zucchini, spinach, mixed greens, maybe some carrots and radishes too. I love playing in the dirt and the feeling of accomplishment when you bring in the harvest!

How did you get so many carrots? We’ve tried carrots for a few years, and I only get about a dozen or so that are edible!
I would love to plant a garden…especially a rose garden. Maybe someday. 🙂
WOW that is a lot of veggies!!! I don’t winter garden…well, not yet…but it would be nice.
I had my first garden in years last year and I really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to some dry weather so I can get the ground tilled under. I’m looking forward to the day when my soil has been transformed into beautiful rich earth instead of the stuff it is now. However, my garden did do well last year even despite the so-so soil

How fun to garden with your helpers this year! I’m going to try green beans for the first time. Will plant tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, squash, and potatoes, too.
I’m glad I found your blog again, especially your garden posts 🙂 We never did a winter garden (although we could have, we’re in Austin TX, very mild here too) we’ve started our summer garden already… I planted zucchini again but we’ve got cucumber beetles eating and killing them:-( We are trying to grow organically so need to find something ‘natural’ to kill them… do you use garlic spray on all your plants? could you recommend anything else to keep the bugs off my plants?
