This unusually cold winter of ours has not done the best for our garden, and it shows.  I admit by the first glance at our garden it looks pretty pitiful.  Small and overgrown with weeds.

But when you look closer there are some wonderful veggies growing in there, for instance this cauliflower, its about the size of a grapefruit.

Also the carrots are growing along

and on closer inspection you can see they are about the size of a quarter in width, so it won’t be too long and we can pick these bad boys.

If you’ve never had garden fresh carrrots they are unbelievably good, nothing like the grocery store so much more flavor.

The cabbage, though a beautiful color still hasn’t grown very much, but has a small head about the size of a clementine.  I still have hope.

The broccoli was cut two weeks ago, but it’s second crop is coming up.  Broccoli with continue to grow and grow.  Not a large head but smaller florets all over the plant.

The brussel sprouts are really growing though not a very tight heads so we will see how this comes along.

The turnips are finally ready for some picking.

and lucky for me I had helpers.

Even if they like to have a sample before we get in the house.

even Chloe was standing guard while we were picking

Well if you really want to know the truth, little Miss Chloe is in season (aka Heat) and was on top the sprinkler stand looking for her boyfriend (aka Beaver).  Not to mention she was howling for him, it was a bit disturbing, sounds almost as if she was choking and meowing at the same time, its not pretty.  Especially at 2am.

But don’t worry she has an appointment at the Vet next week, so no little kitties will be joining the family.

Oh, I am so making Turnips Gratin!!

What’s your favorite way to eat turnips?

I will be posting weekly of the garden so please click on each week for more details. week 1, week 2, week 4 , week 7week 8, week 12 and week 14

  1. Sorry for the horrible cat sounds at such an hour! Hope you make it to the vet before she finds her boyfriend!
The garden is producing some yummy looking things to eat!

  2. The pic of the turnips made me buy some at the grocery store. I love turnips! Been following you for a while. Love the pics of the HEB product, since I am in the Houston area, too! It is my favorite store to shop.

  3. Oooo you SO inspire me! We’re gonna make a bigger garden this year! It’s too bad though that we can’t grow longer with this aweful weather. Maybe I just need to move 🙂

  4. Lately Winter Gardens keep popping up on movies and in books I’ve been reading and everytime I hear it I think of you. Every time.

I don’t like turnips, but those are so pretty I might actually eat them!! 🙂
