By the light of the of the full moon, DT planted our new, improved, bigger, glorious, will produce enough food for all of Southeast Texas Garden, ok I got carried away there. But not only did we plant our new huge garden, but we also planted our old smaller but still large garden. So seriously we are going to have 45 variety of tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, white squash, both Japanese eggplant and black beauty eggplant, several varieties cucumbers, hot and mild jalapeno peppers, shallots, corn, bell peppers, bush and purple hull green beans, white potatoes, black diamond watermelon and dill all coming out our WAA-ZOO!
Looks like we are going to be super busy with our garden this summer, I am excited for all the veggies and new recipes I will try. I am most eager for some fresh garden salsa, yum.
Does anyone have any recipes they would be curious in seeing me cook? Or any favorites to share?
So you want to know the details? Here we go.
Starting with our big garden DT bought 4 types of tomatoes; Celebrity, BHN444, Hillbilly, and Amelia.
DT like to buy plant for his tomatoes, okra, squash, and peppers.

DT has set up a water sprinkler in both gardens that we will put on at least once a day until plants have fully rooted or it rained.
Here are the new planted banana peppers, and purple hull green beans sprouting up.

Old garden– first row is cucumbers, 2nd row of green beans, 3 rd 4 jalapenos, and Kandy Corn (super sweet corn)
4th row white squash, 5th row is cherry tomatoes, and mild jalapenos, last row hybrid cucumbers, and shallots
in the square plot he planted Dill to be used to make dill pickles
But one thing that Daddy doesn’t realize is that this year he is going to have lots of help in the garden!

Okay, so we’re going to do a garden this year. Is this how all gardens should look? With waves of dirt…rows…whatever you may call them? Mounds? So do you have an old link that tells people how to make a garden for the first time?

Oh what a great garden. You’ll be eating well this summer. My hubby is getting our in, too but all that’s planted so far are the root vegetables. Still too much of a chance for a freeze here.

Good luck with your garden! I do not do well with planted things. My flowers always die…but that could be because my neighbor kid hates me and has driven his bike thru them before. So, did you really plant in the dark? I didn’t know that you were supposed to do that.
We’re still planting our seedlings indoors, too chilly here in WV to plant anything outside yet. You’re off to a good start.

Your garden looks so great! We are only able to put potatoes and onions in the ground so far. (We are in Ohio) Can’t wait to start putting in more veggies!
*gasp* Your garden is incredible and huge! I am so jealous. 🙂 We are starting a small garden this year to grow a few veggies – it will probably end up being a salsa garden.
MMMmmm Good! Gosh my mind is just reeling with all the FANTASTIC recipies that can be made with all those veggies! I think my favorite would be Egg Plant Parmesan, but hubby is a HUGE fan of grilled veggie pizza- and I bet with supervision, your boys would be old enough to select and spread their own toppings…especially if you could manage to do it one child at a time. I work as a nanny for twins and I know they LOVE to help in the kitchen. Good luck! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
That is a BIG garden!! We will plant ours next week. We have enlarged it but we don’t have as much as you do. I love seeing al the green things sprouting up! We did plant our tomato plants last week. 20 plants and the next day, 16 of them were eaten down to the ground by a rabbit!

Sheila- great question yes they are rows, my husbands like to grow them this way, but you could also just do raised beds if you don’t have a tiller. I have a link that shows how we prepared our garden, but not for the first time ever. I will work on that for you.

Susan- that’s great, here in Texas our chance for last frost was/is around March 10th, so we are in the clear.
Jill- what a rotten kid! No seriously, my hubby didn’t plant in the dark, it was just late when I was taking pictures and he was finishing up. But we do try to plant around the farmer’s almanac days. Sometimes we do, sometimes we don’t.
Brenda- how exciting, let me know how it turns out, I would love to see pictures.
Blooming Skillet- thats a great start, we did potatoes, and had some leftover shallots from our winter garden.
Kelly- How fun. I always recommend starting simple maybe a few tomatoes, and peppers, they usually do well with lots of sun and water. Good luck
Coley Moley- Great idea! We love homemade pizza’s. Can you move to Texas and be our Nanny?? I love eggplant parmesan also, and can you believe I have never made it.
Sandra- OH my how horrible, ugh. We usually have a chicken wire fence around our garden, for that very reason, but squirrels are usually our culprits. DT did install a hot wire fence for the time being.

That is beautiful! We’re going with “beds” this year, and I can’t wait to get them all planted so I can show them off! I’ve got until Mid-April before our last average frost, though.
I’m planting eggplant this year for the first time ever. I actually just tasted it a couple weeks ago for the first time, too. Would love to see some recipes for them if you have any.
We’ve really amped up our garden plans–so we’re going to be super busy as well. But, I’m going to love it {I hope!}.
Oh that looks fun! I am getting excited about gardening again but we still have to wait a bit before going outside. It was snowing again today. It is time to plant our stuff inside though.

Your veggie garden is fantastic! When I think about a backyard veggie garden, it’s a usually a 6 x 4 ft garden bed. Yours even has a sprinkler system! I suggested to my husband that we should start growing some veggies and his response was “Why don’t you just empty my wallet and burn all the money in it – that way you’ll still have the same effect without all the hardwork.” He was only sort of joking.
It looks great! I wish my husband was into gardening the way yours is. I’ve been nagging mine to finally weed the area where we want to plant. My sprouts are quickly outgrowing the plastic cups I have them in.
Good for you and your family. You will be growing, harvesting and storing food all summer.
Your kids are adorable and will love finding worms and bugs in the garden while you are weeding.
I wish I had one of those gardens at my backyard! I envy you!

Meredith-wow I think gardening is the exact opposite of what your hubby said. Yes its alot of hard work, but in the end it is cheaper than buying from a store, especially if you use your own fertilizer and seeds. And yes most gardens are much smaller but my husbands loves to garden so it keeps getting bigger and bigger.
