This week’s Food Network Chef’s Challenge hosted by I Blame My Mother is Sunny Anderson.  She hosts the show Cooking for Real, and likes to cook meals that Real people eat.

I had fun browsing through her recipes but landed upon this easy donut recipe.  Using store biscuits as the dough couldn’t be any easier.  They were simple to make and eat.  Though the sugar was good, both DT and I preferred them with a basic sugar glaze.  The boys loved them and had fun eating donuts.  I did half of the donuts in the sugar mixture and the other half with glaze and the recipe is included below.

We will be making these again.

Ingredients: 1 orange, zested, 2 cups sugar, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 2 container (10 large) store-bought buttermilk biscuit dough, Vegetable oil, for frying

In a zip lock baggie or a paper bag, add the sugar and

cinnamon to the bag.

Then zest a whole orange

and add to the sugar mixture.  Shake well to mix.

Open the biscuits and cut into 4 equal pieces, and then roll each piece into a ball.

Place each donut hole into the hot oil.

Be sure to flip and get all sides evenly, cook about 2-3 minutes.  Be careful they will brown very quickly.

Scoop them out and place immediately into the sugar mixture, shake well to get each side.

Be sure to enjoy them while they are hot.

Yum!

  1. Granny always made her donuts from can biscuits. I make donuts when AB’s friends spend the night, it is their favorite. I slightly flatten the biscuit on a piece of wax paper covered with flour and I have a little thing that I cut the center out to make the donut hole. I put a few chocolate chips in the center of the donut hole and seal the edges before frying it. Yum! Sometimes I color the glaze and shake sprinkles on the donuts.

  2. Yum! I really like the sound of the orange zest in them. Sort of makes them sounds “lighter” 🙂

And I’ll have to try “SueSue”‘s chocolate chip centered ones…we pretty much eat anything with chocolate, but I bet that orange zest would be good with that too! I love chocolate and orange together 🙂

  3. Yum! Here in Canada we call those Tim Bits. I’m sure you may have heard of Tim Horton’s before? It’s our famous coffee place. The name Tim Bits come from there!

  4. Yum! I’ve heard of making them this way and do think the orange zest would make them fancier. Reminds me of mini donuts from the fair 🙂
