Today is Earth Day, for those of you who didn’t know, its been all a buzz in the blog world, news and tv.  So for my earth day contribution I would like to share some things we do in our house hold to conserve our beautiful earth.

  • We have a compost pile of organic materials like; eggs shells, coffee grounds, pine needles, plant trimmings, fruit and vegetable scraps.  We then use this for planting and mixing in our veggie garden.

  • We use hand towels- instead of paper towels- saves paper waste
  • re-use plastic bags to take our lunches in
  • Recycle- newspapers and aluminum cans
  • Use non-toxic cleaners- my favorite all purpose spray, is 2 cups water, 1/4 cup vinegar, 3-4 drops dish washing soap (like 7th generation), and 2-3 drops lavender or eucalyptus essential oils, mix together in a spray bottle and clean away.

Those are something that we have easily implemented in our lives.

What is something you do?  I would love to hear more ideas and suggestions.

Also a couple of local stores are participating, go check them out today only!

H-E-B stores are giving away 300,000 free reusable tote bags to anyone who brings in five plastic shopping bags from 3 P.M. until 7 P.M. today. More details here.

Walgreens Tote

At Walgreen’s today only you can get a free tote bag with any purchase. Print your coupon here. In addition, this coupon says it is good for 10-20% discount on select items–including Walgreen’s brand items. I’m not sure what all those included items will be.  But I plan on buying some Walgreen’s diapers, getting a free tote and 20% off the diapers.

  1. I so did not see your blog post today until after I posted mine! We posted alot of the same things, including the free Walgreen’s bag.

By the way, I LOVE your blog…so cute. Also, my husband and I are “sorta” newleyweds…we will be celebrating our 5th year this July. Love being married.

AND your kids are SUPER CUTE!

  2. Happy Earth Day. We don’t use a clothes dryer. It’s been year and year just hang dry. We made our own wooden drying rack for indoor drying and have lines on our decks. I made about 50 shopping bags from remnants. I turn off my power strip when i turn off my computer. I eat lots of raw food from my garden. It’s healthier and I save on cooking energy. We swaped out all the old school lightbulbs for twirlies. We downsized from an SUV to a dieslel Bug and get 2-3 times the gas milage. I’ve only driven once in the past year. Quit watching TV. Keep working on reducing the old carbon foot print!

  3. I love the homemade cleaner idea!

We use canvas bags at the store, and when we do get plastic we use them for lunch, dirty diapers (yes….disposables, not cloth) and recycle.

  4. All of these things are so great, my family does most of what you’ve mentioned. I’m going to try out your recipe for cleaning liquid soon!

  5. We live in a city with an extensive recycling program and I’m getting better about remembering to take my reusable bags to the grocery with me!

    Blessings!

  6. thanks for stopping by my blog–I’m so glad i found yours! I admit, I love spongebob as much as my sons. 🙂 That’s great you compost and garden–we garden, too, and the composting has really made a difference in making our soil better.
