DIY: Antique Mercury Glass

I might be a little obsessed with home decor, crafting, and up-cycling lately.  I might also be slightly obsessed with garage sales, thrift store, and antique shopping.  The older, more rustic looking, the better.  And cheap is even better!

I have plenty of boring ole mason jars, plain glass vases, and what nots laying around.  I think a mirror or lamp would also be a fun mercury glass project.  So why not have a little fun with them.  This is quite possible one of the easiest projects I have completed.

I love they way they turned out, simple, beautiful, slightly rustic, and just perfect, if I do say so myself.  In fact, the more spots the better.

To start, find some glass jars, vases anything you’d like the make into mercury glass.

The hardest part was finding the Krylon Looking Glass spray paint.  I eventually found it at Walmart of all places.  For this job I used 1-1/2 cans of spray.

In a spray bottle, add 1/2 cup white vinegar and 1/2 cup water.  Set to fine mist.

Lightly mist your jar

Then quickly spray with the looking glass spray.

And repeat, wait about 30 seconds, and lightly dab the surface with a clean paper towel.

This will give the glass the irregular look.  Do more or less to your preference.

Repeat these steps on all of your glass for about 3-4 coats.

Be sure to flip the jars upside down to get all angles. I didn’t spray the insides as I wanted to put water and flowers in them.

Check for touch up areas, and if needed add another coat.

That’s it!  Let them dry a few hours and use as you would like.  They dry super quickly!

I cut some flowers from our garden and used them as a pretty display in my kitchen window!

I love the way they turned out, the more spotty the better in  my opinion.

Such a fun, simple way to turn the ordinary into something a little more special.
