Patty Melts

What could be better than a grilled cheese / burger combo?  Not much in the opinion of my hubby DT, and two little ravenous boys, who just gobbled these down.  They remind me of a patty melt you would get at your local hometown diner, or something you would see on Diner’s Dive-ins and dives. We call them a Patty melt, but whatever you call them, they are delicious, will fill you up and stick to your ribs.

Ingredients: 1 lb ground beef, 1 med onion, half grated and half sliced, 1/4 tsp. garlic powder, 1 egg, lightly beaten, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. pepper, 2 dashes of Worcestershire, 8 slices of bread, 8 slices of cheese (cheddar, Provolone, Muenster), 4 Tbsp. soft margarine/butter

Start by cracking a egg in a medium sized mixing bowl.

Add the salt, pepper and garlic, mix well.

then add the ground beef, and add a couple of dashes of Worcestershire sauce.

Grate about a third of a large onion into the meat mixture.

Then mix really well, I used my hands, it’s the quickest way to really mix the meat well.

Form into 4-6 equal sized patties, try to make them as thin as possible.

Mine need a little work.  Cook them over a hot skillet for about 2-3 minutes per side.

Go ahead and slice up the remaining onion.

Once the patties are done, set them aside to cool.

Add a couple of the slices of onion to the skillet, with a dash of Worcestershire on top.

Butter the slices of bread on one side.

Flip the onion till it’s good and brown on the other side.

Then remove the onions and wipe down the skillet, if necessary.

Add four pieces of the bread butter side down.

Then add a slice of cheese to each. I choose provolone or muenster for the bottom slice.

Some of the grilled onions.

then the hamburger patties

another slice of cheese. I used cheddar cheese for the top slice.

and top it with the butter bread.  Let this cook about 2-3 minutes.

Then flip and cook until the bread is nice and brown and the cheese is thoroughly melted.

Then slice and serve hot, and melt-y.

I love the mix of the two cheeses but by all means use whatever cheese you like.

Patty Melt

1 lb ground beef

1 med onion, half grated and half sliced

1/4 tsp. garlic powder

1 egg, lightly beaten

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. pepper

2 dashes of Worcestershire

8 slices of bread

8 slices of cheese Cheddar, Provolone, Muenster)

4 Tbsp. soft margarine/butter

In a medium bowl, lightly beat the egg, add the seasonings, add the beef and grated onion. Mix until combined.

Form into thin patties. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.

Heat a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers about 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. Drain the grease from the skillet.  Grill the sliced onions with a dash of Worcestershire for a few minutes on each side then set aside.

In the same skillet, place 4 slices of bread, butter side down. Top each with a slice of cheese, some onions and a burger. Top with remaining slices of cheese, if using, and bread, butter side up.

Cook each sandwich until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.

Makes 4 to 6 burgers.
