The Garden

Welcome to Newlywed’s Vegetable Garden. We’re located near Houston, in Southeast Texas, USA (USDA hardiness zone 9a).  My husband (DT) and I garden as a hobby.

We (or I should say DT) started a kitchen vegetable garden shortly after we were married in May 2006.   The first summer we planted tomatoes, green beans, jalapenos and cucumbers.  They did very well and my interest in veggie gardening peaked.

Our winter’s are so mild here in Texas we are able to plant a late fall/winter garden and have successful results.

We plant a Summer Garden and a Winter Garden each year.  We’ve upgraded our old gardening space to a much larger direct sun garden.

I have to admit that I garden mostly because I think vegetable gardens are beautiful. I love rows of seedlings,  baskets or tables full of bright vegetables. I love the way gardens change with the seasons. My camera is my most important gardening tool.  The camera helps me remember what worked and what didn’t work for us or our garden.  We love to try and plant new and different vegetables as well as our favorites like tomatoes, squash, broccoli and cabbage.

We garden organically meaning we use no chemical pesticides, or chemical fertilizers.  We compost and have a chicken coop, were we “make” our own fertilizer, we also use a homemade garlic spray and an electric fence to ward off pests.

This blog is a way to record what’s going on in my garden, to get advice from other gardeners and hopefully to inspire new gardeners. I am very enthusiastic about my hobby and love to share the experience of vegetable gardening.

HOLY COW!!!! You could start your very own Farmer’s Market!!! Those vegetables are beautiful and I can’t wait to learn more about your gardening. Like I said before, we planted a small one last year and we’re going to expand a little this year. I’m so excited!!!

I saw on one of your recent posts that you froze your tomatoes WHOLE!
I am very excited and curious about this process – as I was completely unaware of saving the summer tomato crop in any fashion except canning – which, let’s face it – who wants to heat up the kitchen that much in the middle of summer? Can you tell me more about how you do that? Any special steps? And can this work for large, Roma and cherry varieties? Please, please tell…
