Garden Variety Week 12

January 2, 2009

The garden has come such a long way and in just 12 short weeks.  So far we have harvested, mustard greens, spinach, lettuce, green shallots, broccoli and just today cabbage.  How exciting!  We have had a very mild winter this year in texas and today it was 75 crazy right? For weeks now we will have a few days in the 40′s- 50′s  then jumps to high 70′s.  It hasn’t been the best weather for our health, but I think the garden is handling it well.

Butternut squash- still there but hardly any growth

Greens after being cut and thinning some old ones, they will contiue to grow and we will have tons more to eat

Photobucket

Carrots- doing well probably ready in a few weeks

Photobucket

Spinach, you can see where we have cut some and how it is growing back, yea!

Photobucket

Lettuce- we  are eating like rabbits, salad almost every night!

This funny onion I threw out in our compost a few weeks back and I noticed it started to sprout, and sprout and sprout.  SO-oo we decided to plant it!

Beautiful Cabbage- my best friend, my favorite veggie in the garden and to cook with.

We’ve ate our first few heads today and they were excellent. Too see check out this post

Here is DT showing how to head the cabbage!

Start off with a really nifty little knife, hold the head, and cut below some of the big outer leaves

Discard old tough leaves, and look ain’t she pretty????

Your garden is growing very well. What a delight: to be able to eat your own vegetables. Thanks for sharing. Happy Show ‘n Tell Friday!

Fantastic garden! I’m in TX, too, but only my lettuce, spinach, and green onions are surviving. Could it be that I covered them with a plastic bag instead of a towel when it froze a few weeks ago? Should I try planting some new things now or wait a few months?

Your garden is lovely! And I am envious! Too cold to grow anything right now. My garden is at rest. When we lived in the desert we had a year around garden. Nothing like fresh produce. We also had concord grapes.

How different your winter photos are from everyone elses. Wow what a great growing season you had this year. I love cabbage too! But I have not been successful in growing it. Out temps always cause it to go to seed.

Wow…I know I’m not suppose to envy, but that is some garden you have cultivated!! There’s just so much peace of mind when you know how your food has been grown. In this house I don’t have space without shade except for containers and last season they didn’t work so well. I’ll try a couple of different things next go ’round! Thanks for sharing!

Have a joyful New Year!

Your broccoli and cabbage look wonderful! I wish I was able to maintain a garden of fresh vegetables but everything I plant just up and dies! I always enjoy looking at your photos. Thanks for sharing them with us!
